Growing up in a middle-class family, I was indoctrinated from childhood about the necessary precautions that come with the obligation of being a female in India. “Better safe than sorry” and “safety first” were the mantras with which we grew up. While my male classmates could hang out in the university for longer periods of time, most of my female classmates (who didn’t have a car) had to come back home early to ensure safety. I have seen some of my female classmates not being able to do the job they wanted, just because it was in a city with higher crime rates against women. Their family persuaded them that it is not safe for them to go. I still remember the day when the Hyderabad incident happened. My father, like million other fathers in India, couldn’t sleep for days. Such heinous crimes are repeated, it shocks us to the core, the shock wears off and we go back to our normal life as if nothing happened. While some regressive people blame ‘modern’ women for being progressive, dressing independently, and staying out late to account for such incidents, other people blame the authorities and family of the woman concerned. Women in our society are equally responsible for such incidents. In my life, I have seen women pulling down other women more often than men. So, it is not a ‘gender issue’ but an issue of the regressive mentality. I came to the US to do my Ph.D. a year back. A lot of things are different here, but something that shocked me in a positive way is the thoughtfulness behind these gestures:
